Cardboard Chair
Reflection / Explanation of Project
For this fun project we had to design and create a cardboard chair. The chair could only be made from cardboard and our imagination. We started with a manila folder prototype and as you can see it looks nothing like the real life because the manila folder wouldn't have worked. It failed because our connections were too flimsy and fragile.
This project taught me how to look at an everyday casualty and think how significant it actually is. Obviously manufactures can use other materials than cardboard but I learned how the thought process is for these people. This thought process will help open up how hard it is for people to make and design the comfort items that I used everyday. Also I learned that even though that there is a lot of prototyping and trial and error into creating the perfect chair. We should've started with more small prototypes instead of just making the actual chair but that is the biggest take away from this unit for me.
There were its negatives also. I wish we had more time to work and tweak the chair but because we had 2 other projects it was hard to do this in the limited amount of time. So I learned that I should be more efficient while working but I was still happy with the outcome because it could've been worse. Also I wish I could've gotten all my points across instead of finding myself caught in my words. I will become less and less shy in front of the class the more I present so the more chances I get the more I can express myself.
Concepts
Tensile strength- is a measure of the ability of a material to withstand tension without breaking
Compressive strength- is a measure of the ability of the material to withstand crushing forces.
Center of Gravity- is the average location of the weight of an object.
What Mr. William's Was Looking For
Function- Chair being able to support 150 pound person while still being comfortable.
Structure- Is if 150 pound person can be centered anywhere on the chair.
Aesthetics- How good chair looks to the eye.
Economy- How much cardboard used to complete the chair.
Integrity- Is the honest to complete the work and make the best possible chair.
Trade-offs- What trade-offs we did for each aspect of the chair.
Decision Making- Decisions were based on facts and evidence of work.
